Blackmagic Design Workflow

Studio Setup
with Blackmagic Design

Difficulty Level: Beginner

This is the setup most people start with when they want to step up from a webcam and look like they actually know what they’re doing. Two Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2s sit across from the hosts, each connected to the ATEM Mini Pro via a single HDMI cable.

Audio goes straight into each camera through the 3.5mm input, which keeps the desk clean and the cable runs short. From the ATEM, the program feed goes out via USB-C as a webcam signal into the streaming PC, where OBS or vMix picks it up for the live stream or recording. A USB flash disk plugged into the ATEM handles the local backup recording at the same time, so nothing is lost if the internet drops mid-episode.

The whole thing runs on one switcher, four cables, and zero external converters. It is the kind of rig you can pack into a Pelican case and set up anywhere in under 30 minutes.

Church Livestreaming
with Blackmagic Design

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Churches were some of the earliest adopters of live streaming, and this setup reflects how most medium-sized congregations are doing it today.

Three Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K Pro G2s cover the stage from different angles, while a laptop running ProPresenter or PowerPoint feeds the lyrics and sermon slides into the switcher as a fourth HDMI source.

All of this lands in the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2, which is doing more work than its compact size suggests. The downstream keyer layers the lyrics over the live program feed automatically, the house audio mixer plugs straight into the onboard XLR combo inputs so there is no separate audio interface needed, and the built-in streaming engine pushes directly to YouTube or Facebook without needing the streaming PC to do the heavy lifting.

Every camera gets recorded as its own isolated file at the same time, which means the worship team can pull individual angle recordings later for social media clips or highlight reels. For a setup that fits on a small production desk at the back of the hall, it covers a lot of ground.

Sports Broadcast
with Blackmagic Design

Difficulty Level: Pro

This is the kind of rig you see in a small OB truck covering a regional football match or a school athletics meet that wants broadcast-quality output.

Four cameras feed the switcher over SDI — two Blackmagic URSA Broadcast G2s on the main wide and sideline positions, and two Studio Camera 4K Pro G2s covering the endzone and the commentary desk. The scoreboard graphics machine outputs over HDMI, which gets converted to SDI via a Blackmagic Micro Converter before it enters the chain.

Commentary audio from the caster desk comes in directly through the ATEM Television Studio HD8 ISO’s XLR inputs, which feeds the onboard audio mixer without needing a separate embedder or converter in the path.

On the output side, the ATEM’s built-in ISO recording captures every SDI input to its own file on an attached USB drive, and a DaVinci Resolve workstation reads those files live so the replay operator can mark points of interest and cut to a replay angle at any time.

The fill and key signal from the replay system returns via UltraStudio 4K Mini into two dedicated switcher inputs, so replays drop cleanly into the program feed on air. Two Blackmagic SmartView 4K monitors give the director a full multiview of all inputs and a clean look at the program output side by side.
